A Dutch-Belgium Collaboration
The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Canberra and the Netherlands Consulate-General in Sydney, together with the Belgian Embassy in Canberra, have undertaken to promote the Dutch language in Australia.
The project was initiated when advice was received that the number of students enrolled nationally in Dutch language courses at high school level was falling to such an extent that study of the Dutch language may no longer be offered as an optional subject in the future. Australian High School students can currently choose Dutch as an exam subject as a Language Other Than English (LOTE) in four states: New South Wales , South Australia , Tasmania and Victoria .
Our focus is to raise awareness in the community, support language projects and develop new networks between schools, students and teachers through national outreach. The ultimate goal is to increase the number of students, teachers and Dutch language programs in Australia and have Dutch introduced as a LOTE subject in all other states.
