1 Longer processing times for travel document applications in January 2014

If you wish to apply for a Dutch passport or identity card during the first 3 weeks of January, you should take into account that processing times may be longer than usual. Also, appointment availability will be limited.

2 "Warriors for Love" at The Street Theatre

On the occasion of the 2013 United Nations Human Rights Day, the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its embassies and missions around the world organized various events to both commemorate Human Rights Day and to generate awareness for human rights issues. Activities included discussion panels, seminars, film and documentary screenings, speeches and high-level meetings with political actors.

5 President of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, gave this year's Europe House Lecture in the Hague

In his speech President and Minister of Finance, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, described the Eurozone as a community with solidarity among its members and an understanding of each other’s responsibilities. The euro crisis has put this community to the test. Doubts were raised about member states’ commitment to the rights and obligations within a monetary union. But the Eurozone took its responsibility - it showed significant efforts to help weak members and strengthened fiscal policy legislations at the same time. The work on the future design of the system is ongoing.

6 National campaign in the Netherlands raises over 18 million for Philippines

On Monday 18 November all Dutch broadcasting companies worked together to inform the public about the disaster and pay attention to the work of the cooperating aid organisations SHO. The amount is expected to rise over the next days. Minister Ploumen was very pleased with the results.

7 Wim Kok presents the Cleveringa lecture in Sydney

Since 1946 the Leids University Fund organises the annual Cleveringa lecture. In the Netherlands and abroad, several Cleveringa lectures are being held by academics and prominent figures in remembrance of the original lecture held by Professor Cleveringa. Mr Kok has chosen the following topic for this year’s lecture: “Fostering democracy and good governance in times of change and democratic transition”.
